Lot 562
1841 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded MS-66. One of the most original Seated Liberty dimes this cataloguer has ever laid eyes on! The ancient "aluminum-foil" silver color is staggering to the highly trained eye: it just screams "pristine." On top of this are wonderful splashes of golden iridescence. Some people are known to have an aversion to this kind of superb originality (including, oddly enough, PCGS), probably because it is impossible to see "through" such toning. But the expert eye knows that toning like this is like patina on an ancient coin--a coating, a protective surface that has been laid down naturally over a long period of time. Examining this coin very closely with a 14x glass fails to locate more than just minute contact ticks and a single tiny mark on Liberty's tummy. This dime is also boldly struck in its centers and clear down to the tiny star points. This is the only coin in its grade category, according to NGC, with a single coin graded "higher" numerically--but almost nothing we've seen in many years comes closer to sheer perfection. An opportunity indeed for the astute collector.

1844 Liberty Seated Dime. EF-45. The "Little Orphan Annie" dime, so called by Frank C. Ross, a hack writer from Kansas City who hoarded this date for years, then promoted it selling off his hoard at a useful profit (Breen). This particular example has been cleaned, and tends toward a certain dullness in the color application. Nevertheless, it still remains a popular, low-mintage date and this coin boasts smooth, even wear and damage free surfaces.

1856 Liberty Seated Dime. Large date. NGC graded MS-66. Deep sea-green toning with russet highlights on the devices prevail, and this delicately aged dime shows few signs of stress for its age, aside from color, which is slightly disturbed on the high point of the obverse. The stars, drapery folds and leaf veins, however, are sharp as a tack, with no signs of striking weakness. Look closely and you will find an intriguing coin here. Only 3 have been so graded by NGC, with a single coin graded higher.
